Conference Announcement

The Network of Finnish University Language Centres (FINELC) and the Language Centre of the University of Helsinki are honoured to host the 11th CercleS International Conference in Helsinki, Finland, on 2 – 4 September 2010.

The Conference will bring together teachers and researchers from Language Centres, Departments, Institutions, Faculties and Schools in higher education whose main responsibility is the teaching of language.

The general theme of the Conference is

University Language Centres - Language Policy and Innovation.

The Conference will welcome submissions addressing the above general theme and the following sub-themes:

1. Putting policies into practice

The focus area can be approached through, for example, the following subtopics:

-          language policy in the European Union – theory and practice;

-          national, local or institutional language policy work, language programmes and/or strategies and their practical implementations;

-          University Language Centres and/or their teachers as language policy implementers;

-          best practices of University Language Centres  and/or their teachers concerning the language policy implementations.   

2. Learning outcomes – strategies and realities

The focus area can be approached through, for example, the following subtopics:

-          competency-based teaching, learning and assessment of language skills;

-          enhancing lifelong language learning;

-          the challenges of competency-based university degrees to the curricular and pedagogical development of University Language Centres;

-          the processes and practices of recognizing, assessing and accrediting prior (formal, informal, non-formal) language learning.

3. Personalising learning environments and networking

The focus area can be approached through, for example, the following subtopics:

-          the use of modern learning technology in enhancing language learning and/or assessment of language skills;

-          social media, such as Facebook, as language learning devices – combining formal, informal and non-formal language learning;

-          personal study counselling, ELP and creating individual language learning paths;

-          autonomous language learners, self-study and self-access;

-          best practices of University Language Centres concerning networking and mutual co-operation.

4. Plurilingualism and English as a Lingua Franca

The focus area can be approached through, for example, the following subtopics:

-          plurilingualism as an educational goal, with practical examples;

-          plurilingualism promoting intercultural understanding;

-          English as a threat to other languages or a stimulus to multi- or plurilingualism;

-          English as a Lingua Franca, what is it?

5. Managing change and quality assurance

The focus area can be approached through, for example, following subtopics:

-          quality in University Language Centre contexts;

-          developing quality assurance and working processes in University Language Centres, co-operation, benchmarking and best practices;

-          ways of collecting feedback from students, collaborators, stakeholders and other such interest groups, utilization of feedback in the development of teaching, other  LC work and organization;

-          future prospects of University Language Centres and proactive development needed for keeping them up-to-date.

6. Current issues in LSP

The focus area can be approached through, for example, the following subtopics:

-          the concept of LSP today;

-          recent research results concerning different aspects of LSP;

-          pedagogical innovations and pilot experiments in LSP teaching;

-          on-going LSP projects.

Submissions are invited both for paper and poster presentations.

The official languages of the conference are: English, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Swedish.

Submissions for oral and poster presentations

Oral presentations

Abstracts of maximum 300 words should be submitted electronically via e-form by 31 March 2010. Contributors will be informed of the decision by 15 May 2010.

Each abstract should have a short, specific title. The body should concisely state the objective of the study or project, its methods, results, and conclusions.

The abstract should also include the name(s) of the author(s), the university, and contact information.

Also, requirements for special equipment should be mentioned.

The oral presentation should last 20 minutes, with an additional 10 minutes for discussion.

The abstract may be in one of the official languages of the conference: English, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Swedish.  The title and abstract are to be in the language of the actual presentation with support material in another language. There should be a short summary in a second language (which will be in the same language as the support material).

Poster presentations

Abstracts of maximum 250 words should be submitted electronically via e-form by 31 March 2010. Contributors will be informed of the decision by 15 May 2010.

Each abstract should have a short, specific title. The body should concisely state the objective of the study or project, its methods, results and conclusions.

The abstract should also include the name(s) of the author(s), the university, and contact information. At least one of the poster authors should be present at the conference.

Requirements for special equipment should be mentioned. Equipment will be provided by the organiser whenever possible.

The abstract should be in one of the official languages of the conference: English, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Swedish. The title and abstract are to be in the language of the poster.

The posters will be presented in a separate time section.

The maximum size of posters will be limited to 90 cm x 110 cm (width x height). More detailed guidelines will be provided to contributors in June 2010.

ABSTRACT BOOK

All the abstracts will be published both in the abstract book and on the conference website. Since the organisers cannot take the responsibility of revising the language of the abstracts, we would greatly appreciate it if, when needed, you would have the language checked yourself. Thus, responsibility for the quality of the language remains with the presenter.

The revised abstracts for poster presentations should be submitted electronically via e-form at latest by 20 July 2010. Please do not send the abstract via e-mail.

If you do not make any changes in your original abstract, you do not have to resubmit it.

Annonce de colloque

Le Réseau des centres de langues des universités finlandaises (FINELC) et le Centre de langues de l’Université de Helsinki ont le plaisir de vous convier au 11ième Colloque International CercleS à Helsinki, Finlande, du 2 au 4 septembre 2010.

Le colloque réunira des enseignants et des chercheurs des centres de langues, départements, institutions, facultés et établissements d’enseignement  supérieur ayant pour vocation principale l’enseignement des langues.

Le thème général du colloque est:

Centres de langues des universités – politique linguistique et innovation

Le colloque accueillera des contributions portant sur ce thème général et sur les sous-thèmes suivants :

1.      Politique des langues : de la théorie à la pratique

2.      Résultats d’apprentissage – stratégies et réalités

3.      Individualisation  des environnements d’apprentissage et mise en place  de réseaux

4.      Le plurilinguisme et l’anglais comme ‘lingua franca’

5.      Gestion du changement et assurance qualité

6.      Les langues de spécialité aujourd’hui

Vous pouvez soumettre des propositions de communications et d’affiches.

Les langues officielles du colloque sont : l’anglais, l’allemand, le français, l’espagnol, l’italien, le finnois et le suédois.

Communications

Des résumés n’excédant pas 300 mots doivent être envoyés par formulaire électronique jusqu’au 31 Mars 2010. Les intervenants seront informés de la décision du comité scientifique au plus tard le 15 mai 2010.

Chaque résumé doit être doté d’un titre court et précis et inclure une description concise de l’objet de l’étude ou du projet ainsi que des méthodes utilisées, des résultats et des conclusions.

Le résumé doit également inclure le nom de l’auteur / les noms des auteurs, ainsi que l’université et les coordonnées.

N’hésitez pas à mentionner également tout besoin de matériel particulier.

La communication devra être d’une durée de 20 minutes, elle sera suivie d’une discussion de 10 minutes.

Le résumé peut être écrit dans une des langues officielles du colloque : anglais, allemand, français, espagnol, italien, finnois ou suédois. Le titre et le résumé doivent être rédigés dans la langue qui sera celle de la communication, qui doit être accompagnée de documents rédigés dans une autre langue.  Il est nécessaire de fournir une version courte du résumé également dans cette deuxième langue.

Conference Announcement

Der Verbund der finnischen Hochschulsprachenzentren (FINELC) und das Sprachenzentrum der Universität Helsinki heißen Sie zur 11. Internationalen CercleS-Tagung, die vom 2. bis 4. September 2010 in Helsinki, Finnland, stattfindet, herzlich willkommen.

Die Tagung führt Lehrkräfte und Wissenschaftler aus Sprachenzentren und Fremdspracheninstituten an Hochschulen zusammen, die sich mit der Vermittlung von Sprachen beschäftigen.

Das Tagungsthema lautet

Sprachenzentren an Hochschulen – Sprachpolitik und Innovation

Als Vortrage können Beitrage zum oben genannten Tagungsthema sowie zu folgenden Schwerpunktbereichen eingereicht werden:

1.      Umsetzung der Sprachpolitik in der Praxis

2.      Lernergebnisse – Strategien und Wirklichkeit

3.      Personalisierung von Lernumgebungen und Netzwerkarbeit

4.      Mehrsprachigkeit und Englisch als Lingua Franca

5.      Sprachenzentren im Wandel und Qualitätssicherung

6.      Fachsprachen heute

Die Beitrage können als Vorträge oder als Poster-Präsentationen eingereicht werden.

Die Konferenzsprachen sind Deutsch, Englisch, Finnisch, Französisch, Italienisch, Schwedisch und Spanisch.

Einreichung von Vorträgen und Poster-Präsentationen

Vorträge

Abstracts können bis spätestens 31. März 2010 mit Hilfe eines elektronischen Formulars eingereicht werden. Diese sollen 300 Wörter nicht überschreiten. Mögliche Beiträger werden bis zum 15. Mai 2010 über die Entscheidung informiert.

Vorträge

Der Titel eines Abstracts sollte kurz und prägnant formuliert sein. Das Abstract sollte die Ziele der jeweiligen Studie oder des Projektes, die verwendeten Methoden, die Ergebnisse sowie die Schlussfolgerungen klar und präzise beschreiben.

Weiterhin sollte das Abstract den/die Namen des/der Vortragenden, die Angabe seiner/ihrer Universität und seine/ihre Kontaktdaten enthalten.

Außerdem sollen Angaben zu ggf. erforderlicher technischer Ausstattung für die Präsentation gemacht werden.

Für den Vortrag sind 20 Minuten, für die anschließende Diskussion 10 Minuten vorgesehen.

Das Abstract kann in einer der Tagungssprachen abgefasst sein: Deutsch, Englisch, Finnisch, Französisch, Italienisch, Schwedisch und Spanisch. Titel und Abstract sind in der Sprache einzureichen, in der auch der Vortrag gehalten wird. Des Weiteren soll eine kurze Zusammenfassung in einer weiteren Sprache eingereicht werden; in dieser zweiten Sprache sollen auch die Präsentationsfolien, Handouts oder weitere Begleitmaterialien verfasst werden.

Poster-Präsentationen
